God Pleaser or People Appeaser?

Am I now seeking human approval or God's approval? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still pleasing people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Galatians 1:10 NRSV

Am I pleasing people? This should be our own question. It’s interesting that we read and interpret the scripture, but the scripture, in turn, read us, interrogates us and raises question within our hearts about our own self. Many times, at our workplaces, educational institutions, and other places where we are with other people, we tend to be nice and end up pleasing others. When God gave me this topic, I could not think of a better example than my own parents. They have been in Ministry for the past 35+ years and I haven’t seen them please any human, through all trials and troubles they have boldly stood in their faith continuing to serve God through it all, even today. I have seen both of them say a firm ‘NO’ to many things, confronting people face to face, and condemning many with the truth. Their only focus was and will always be is to please God in all that they do, to walk and lead people in Truth and in Faith. As they had stood firm in faith and trusted God in all circumstances, God had honored them accordingly. Growing up with people of such faith has shaped me, in the same manner, to stand firm and say ‘No’. There were times when I thought pleasing people was a way to survive in this world, that it would help, to get things done and make ways easier to survive. But I have learned to stick to the truth, I always make sure that my words are straight and not twisted to please any human.

…But let your “Yes” be yes and your “No” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

James 5:12 NRSV

Many characters from the Bible like, Joseph, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and many others were known for saying ‘No’. We can not work for the Kingdom, being people pleasers. Today, I encourage you to stand firm in your faith and in your words, you might look rude and arrogant in the eyes of others, but I’m sure you’ll be at peace.

“When you say ‘yes’ to others, make sure you aren’t saying ‘No’ to yourself”

-Paulo Coehlo

Let’s take some time to think and analyze if we are really pleasing people or if we are pursuing a life pleasing God.

When was the last time you said ‘yes’ when you really should have said ‘no’?

Father God, I pray that you’d help me to say ‘No’ and set me free from such people-pleasing tendencies. Help me to live a life that is pleasing in your sight, let my words and deeds bring glory to your name.

It is so by Faith, and by Faith so it is. AMEN❤
